The Odia-language filmBaghuni—translated asDance Like a Tiger—has emerged as a cultural torchbearer after its motion poster was unveiled at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025. The presentation took place at the Bharat Pavilion, an official platform set up by India’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in partnership with NFDC, underscoring the growing global visibility of Indian regional cinema.
A Cross-Border Cinematic Collaboration
Directed by Jitendra Mishra,Baghuniis an Indo-UK co-production bringing together creative forces from both countries. The film is backed by Glocal Films UK and Cinema4Good Pvt Ltd, with production support from India’s National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Actor Sabyasachi Mishra leads the cast, with acclaimed names such as Subash Sahoo (sound design), Sukant Panigrahy (production design), and Prem Anand (music) contributing to the project.
Story Rooted in Odisha’s Heritage
The screenplay, co-written by National Award-winning filmmakers Shankhajeet De, Dr. Sulagna Mohanty, and Utpal Borpujari, explores themes of identity, cultural resistance, and resilience. The dialogues are crafted by Susanta Mani. The film is set to be shot across multiple locations in Odisha and London, with dialogues in Odia, Sambalpuri, Koshli, and Hindi, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the region.
A Global Stage for Local Stories
NFDC Managing Director Prakash Magdum hailed the film as a “landmark opportunity for Odia cinema to step onto the international stage.” With a focus on promoting underrepresented voices,Baghuniaims to bridge local stories with global audiences.
This Cannes appearance comes at a time when Indian regional cinema is gaining increasing recognition at global festivals, withBaghunistanding out not just for its narrative promise, but for its commitment to cultural authenticity.
