MUMBAI – In a move that mirrors its previous market-disrupting strategies, Reliance Jio is set to launch its highly anticipated AI-powered smart glasses, dubbed JioFrames, with a targeted price point under ₹10,000. Unveiled during the company’s 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM), the device is positioned as a direct, affordable challenger to global premium offerings like the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which currently retail for nearly three times the price.
Designed for the Indian Consumer
JioFrames are being pitched not just as a gadget, but as an “AI-powered wearable platform” specifically tailored for the Indian lifestyle. Unlike many global competitors that primarily support major international languages, Jio’s smart glasses feature a multilingual AI voice assistant capable of understanding and communicating in several regional Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil.
Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani emphasized that the device is designed to be a “hands-free companion,” bringing artificial intelligence “right in front of your eyes, beyond the smartphone.”
Key Features and Capabilities
The glasses are engineered for everyday use, featuring a lightweight, comfortable design that houses a sophisticated suite of technology:
- Visuals & Media: A built-in HD camera allows users to capture 1080p photos and videos, or even livestream directly to social media. All media is automatically backed up to the Jio AI Cloud.
- Audio: Equipped with open-ear speakers, the glasses allow users to listen to music, podcasts, and take phone calls while remaining aware of their physical surroundings.
- Real-Time Assistance: The AI assistant can provide real-time translations of menus and signs, offer step-by-step cooking instructions, and even summarize books or study materials hands-free.
- Health Tracking: The wearable acts as a fitness coach, tracking step counts and providing wellness tips via voice commands.
Market Impact and Availability
By pricing the JioFrames under the ₹10,000 mark, Reliance is following its “proven strategy of undercutting rivals” to make high-end technology accessible to the masses. While the product was showcased at the AGM, the commercial rollout is expected within the next 2 to 3 months.
As India’s smart eyewear market is projected to reach $1.2 billion by 2034, Jio’s entry could be the catalyst that shifts smart glasses from a niche luxury item to a mainstream consumer staple.
